What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the process of structuring your website content so AI answer engines can extract, understand, and cite it directly. This includes schema markup, answer-first content formatting, FAQ sections, structured data, and technical fixes that make your content machine-readable. AEO is the on-site layer of GEO.
AEO vs GEO — how they relate
Think of AEO as what happens on your website and GEO as what happens everywhere else. AEO makes your site parseable by AI crawlers. GEO builds the third-party authority that causes AI systems to mention you even when they aren't reading your site directly.
Both are required. A site with perfect AEO but zero off-site presence will rarely get cited. A brand with strong Reddit and press presence but poor on-site structure gives AI systems nothing concrete to extract.
Core AEO checklist
- Schema markup: Organization, FAQPage, Service, Article, and WebPage JSON-LD on every key page.
- Answer-first content: Lead paragraphs that directly answer the question the page targets — before any fluff.
- Visible FAQ sections: Questions as H3, answers as visible HTML (not JS-gated). Match FAQ schema exactly.
- Semantic HTML: Proper heading hierarchy, article/section tags, one H1 per page.
- robots.txt: Explicit Allow rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended.
- llms.txt: Plain-text context file at domain root describing your entity, services, and key pages.
- Freshness signals: datePublished and dateModified meta tags, regular content updates.
- Entity descriptions: Consistent boilerplate defining who you are, what you do, and which platforms you serve.
The 33% rule
Research shows 44% of all LLM citations come from the first 33% of a page. AEO content strategy front-loads the answer: definition first, context second, details third. AI systems rarely read to the bottom of a page before forming a citation.
AEO for US, UK, and Canadian businesses
Brands competing in AI answers need AEO that includes clear market signals: areaServed in schema for the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada; USD pricing in visible HTML; and pages targeting queries like "GEO agency USA," "GEO agency UK," and "GEO agency Canada." FormLabs builds this structure as part of every engagement.
